Summer is in full swing. A number of community groups in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and frequently some measure of government funding, have put together a summer full of free summer theater in the parks. The free theatre events listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're FREE.

- Friday, August 5, 2022 beginning at 7.30 pm / Pericles - This Shakespearean play has a dramatic mix of tragedy, romance and comedy, all rolled up in one. It opens with Pericles life in danger as he is asked to decipher a riddle, the answer to which will result in his death. So he asks for time to think about it and then flees. In the course of his flight he wins a contest and the prized princess, impregnates her, loses her in childbirth, and goes on to other adventures before reuniting with his daughter and wife [who was found alive swept to shore]. Free Theater at After Work Theater - Free Things To Do In Brooklyn NYC
Location. They're a flexible, multi-space, traveling theater group. So the performance space for Rent is TBD. Stay tuned.
- Sunday - Sunday, September 11 - 18, 2022 - Rent - Rent is a musical based on La Boheme, an Italian Opera written in the late 1800's and set in Paris about the life of struggling artists. In the play, Playwright Billy Aronson wanted to replace the aesthetic of 19th century Paris, with the grit and HIV epidemic of the late 1990's. He also morphs a traditional opera into a rock opera. He died of an unusual health condition [not HIV / AIDs] before the play became a resounding success. After Work Theater Group is a flexible, multi-space, traveling theater group that both produces and performs in a mix of free / not free productions, and they also do classes.

Free Summer Theater in Brooklyn Bridge Park - Free Things To Do in the Brooklyn Heights / Dumbo Neighborhoods of NYC
Location. Brooklyn Bridge Park is located along the East River underneath the Brooklyn Bridge and adjacent to the Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo neighborhoods of BK. The 7/22 performance is on the Harbor View Lawn. The eastern border of the park is the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, so there are limited entrances from the Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo neighborhoods. The Harborview Lawn may be accessed by crossing over the BQE at Middaugh Street in Brooklyn Heights.

The play centers around the relationships of a domineering woman and her five daughters, many of whom are interested in one of the daughters suitor. Wikipedia says, "... The play explores themes of repression, passion, and conformity, and inspects the effects of men upon women..."

McEneny and Musical score by Rob Parker. The play is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, set twenty years before the tornado carries Dorothy away and centers on a young Almira Gulch and Emmadiah Gale." - Sunday, July 31, 2022 beginning at 7 pm - The Lincoln Dress Fundraiser. Piper is producing a play which they describe as " ... Albany, NY 1931. Four broken people plot to steal the historic dress that Clara Harris wore in the booth of Fords Theatre on the night of Lincolns assassination. The haunted dress is brought back to the rooming house of WWI veteran Donal, who along with a broken friend, an aging prostitute, and an African American domestic with secrets of her own, experience a night where the dress haunts each of them...." Note - Currently, they have lifted their vaccine requirements and mask wearing is optional, but they also claim, "...Coney Island USA has been closely monitoring the status of the current coronavirus outbreak and considers the safety of our supporters, patrons, employees and cast members of the utmost importance ...", so this could change, as the virus spread conditions change.
